Excerpts from the report by Kathryn "Kitty" Weldon, Principal Analyst, Enterprise Mobility, Current Analysis
The market for mobile e-mail solutions remains frustratingly small compared to its potential, and while the blame may be laid on the expense of smartphones and data plans, as well as the complexity and fears of breached security by IT managers, there is another reason why take-up of wireless e-mail remains so small. The kinds of workers that need remote communication the most tend to be field workers in sales, technical support, and delivery/logistics positions? for these workers e-mail may be overkill, better suited to white-collar professionals and affluent prosumers.
Instead, the kind of quick, instant, inexpensive, immediate, concise type of communication derived from
SMS, enterprise-grade messaging, and even Instant Messaging make these alternative messaging solutions more suitable for these workers communication requirements. With so much on the carriers plates, however, and with the continued focus on e-mail as the killer
mobile business application, what can be done to make messaging ?enterprisegrade? and what solutions are already on the market?
